Amid awards season, as the magazine covers fill up with photos of actors quietly smizing “for your consideration” down the camera lens, Harper’s Bazaar dropped their latest issue with an unexpected star on its front page: Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. What’s she promoting? Herself. This is the real Meghan, the one who has reclaimed her agency after the royal nightmare that left her without a voice. Now, she’s ready to speak up. Again.

We’ve been here before, right? We know these lines because we heard them in the Oprah interview, The Cut profile, many a panel she’s appeared on, and her podcast. The royal Meghan was stifled from being her true self, stripped of her agency by a racist and sexist institution that threw her to the wolves to maintain a crooked status quo. Now, she’s free, living her best California life with her family, and ready to be her authentic self. Apparently, this is different from the other times she’s said this over the years.
